In the interests of full disclosure, let me confess that I have long been a fan for all things cycling, starting as a BMX racer before buying my first road bike while still a young lad. So it will be no surprise that you’ll occasionally see cycling related posts that incorporate graphic design in the future.
First introduced in the 19th century, bicycles now number about one billion worldwide and are the principal means of transportation in many cities. Throughout the early years, advertisements played an important part in popularizing the bicycle and along with organized events, brought mainstream acceptance to cycling.
Combining illustration and hand-drawn typography, artists produced images in rich vibrant colors that romanticized and intrigued. This collection gives a cross-section of cycling advertisements from the 19th and 20th century, evoking the lure and the beauty of the machine and the sport.
