The work of Mike and Doug Starn has always been as much about the process as it is the subject matter. The materials used to create their photographs have always worked to inform the subject matter and offer another way to engage their work. In person, the work can be massive in scale and worth seeking out. For local Atlanta readers, I believe the High Museum of Art have a few pieces in their collection. Check out their website for more artwork.

Here are some fantastic paintings by Japanese artist Yuji Yamada. The tightly cropped paintings give you enough information to capture the essence of the subject, which in this case are athletes in action.
The new exhibit from Chris Beas is titled Tamburello, named after Imola’s infamous Formula One race track. It’s a stretch of road marred by the tragic events of the 1984 Grand Prix where two drivers crashed and a third died. Artist Chris Beas uses that race to create his new exhibit at Martha Otero gallery. The work is a mix of sculpture, gouache on paper paintings and installation. The F1 on display here captures the incredible spectacle of power and speed for which it’s know. It also juxtaposes these images with the intrinsic danger that is interpreted in almost sublime form through gouache on paper.

Danish artist Peter Callesen creates meticulous sculptural works by cutting single sheets of paper and using the removed paper to create figures or buildings. Callesen states, ‘The negative and absent 2 dimensional space left by the cut, points out the contrast to the 3 dimensional reality it creates.’

His installations, meanwhile, involve complex layers of paper cut items that are equally impressive.

Like fellow artist Rob Ryan, Callesen succeeds to create stories through the materials that can be dark, humorous and always interesting. You can find more of his work after the jump and through his studio.

One thing is obvious when looking at the work of papercut artist Rob Ryan, all things are connected.
